I’ve never been to a dawn ANZAC service before. I feel almost ashamed to say this. This morning I got up for the lockdown #StandAtDawn service and was absolutely blown away with emotion.

The Last Post. The National Anthems. Thinking of all those soldiers who landed on that beach to mass fatalities. Their families’ heartbreak. Wives who went on without husbands. Children who grew up without fathers. Parents who survived their children. Soldiers who returned with such horrific experiences. Soldiers who did not. Tears were streaming down my face, and still are as I type.

I do not have any personal connection to an ANZAC, returned or not. But this morning I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude, sadness and remembrance for all those who do.

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.”
